Star Trek Tech – Here We Come

Star Trek Tech – Here We Come

New developments in nanotechnology are coming all the time. There are several companies currently working on perfecting nanorobot technology. In all probability the first application humanity will have for nanorobots will be somewhere in diagnosis. Being able to take a minute amount of blood from somebody, less than the amount that would be found on the head of a pinhead, and being able to use that to diagnose a diverse array of different ailments or conditions. We already have the ability to do that, and it is just a matter of time until we build these micro-machines that are capable of helping us do it more readily and easier. Our own bodies do this on a daily basis, so mimicking the function of the biological processes already in use by our bodies, that have evolved over a million years or so, should be relatively easy.

In the long run nanotechnology in medicine will be utilized to do surgery. Ultimately it will be used in such a way that invasive surgery techniques such as we apply now will almost be a thing of the past. Even in such rare cases where it is absolutely necessary, nanotechnology will ease the way, by doing a lot of the work from the inside, if you will. It has a plethora of applications; from helping the immune system by specifically targeting invaders to repair of torn blood vessels at a micro level, nanorobots will be invaluable helpers in the fight to extend the human lifetime. In time, nanorobots may be used to repair cells that are aging, effectively proving to be a “fountain of youth” of sorts, possibly extending the human lifespan to levels that are currently undreamed of. Imagine a 150-year-old man with the body of a thirty-year-old man. It just might be possible in the near future.
